NASHUA – The proposal for a new two-year teachers’ contract passed another hurdle Thursday night, when members of the Aldermanic budget review committee gave their unanimous support for approving the deal.

The contract, which was approved by the teachers union and Board of Education a week ago, now moves on to the full Board of Aldermen for approval with the committee’s favorable recommendation. If ratified, it would then move to Mayor Donnalee Lozeau for final approval. As a co-sponsor, she’s expected to approve it.

Members of the committee voted to support the teachers’ contract after less than an hour of discussion. There were some questions about changes to the retirement process Continue reading “Teacher contract proposal to be taken to aldermen for approval – NashuaTelegraph.com” »

The current Nashua Teachers’ Union (NTU) contract expires on August 31, 2011 and the NTU and the Nashua Board of Education have been engaged in bargaining for a successor contract agreement since April of 2010. Negotiations have covered a wide range of topics over that time.

On January 25th, after fourteen (14) face-to-face bargaining sessions, the Nashua Teachers’ Union unilaterally declared that an impasse exists in the current negotiations. The NTU took the action in accordance with NH collective bargaining guidelines/PELRB regulations. The Board of Education believes that further progress could be made by continuing face-to-face negotiations but concurs with the NTU’s right to go to mediation.

The Board of Education and NTU are in the process of agreeing to a mutually acceptable mediator to begin the mediation process. Mediation in NH is non-binding but both sides hope that the mediation process will provide clarity as well as an opportunity to reach a contractual agreement before the start of the 2011-2012 school year.
