Read Mayor Donnalee Lozeau’s announcement on the Pennichuck purchase.

NASHUA – Ten years in the making, the city’s historic purchase of Pennichuck Corp. and its water utilities was finalized by a phone call Wednesday morning.

At 9:35 a.m., bond underwriters who helped the city finance the $200 million acquisition of Pennichuck informed Mayor Donnalee Lozeau the deal was complete.

By owning Pennichuck, the city can protect the local watershed for future generations while controlling costs, including the water bills of 34,000 customers that are predicted Continue reading “Nashua now owns Pennichuck Corp. after decade of talks and fights – NashuaTelegraph.com” »

NASHUA – A few aldermen questioned the city’s handling of Pennichuck-owned property that could be commercially developed, but other officials defended the process.

The back-and-forth transpired Tuesday night shortly before the Board of Aldermen went into a non-public session with the Conservation Commission to discuss what the city can do about the Pennichuck property, with compensating the developer as a possible option.

The debate centered around a parcel off Concord Street for which the developer has city approval to build 85 units of elderly housing.

It is the last piece of untouched developable Pennichuck land in Nashua, and the developers – North Concord Street Properties LLC – can now start building Continue reading “City officials argue about Pennichuck land before meeting privately – NashuaTelegraph.com” »

NASHUA – A controversial sale of Pennichuck Corp. property has occurred just days before the company is set to be purchased by the city.

North Concord Street Properties LLC was set to close a $2.2 million land deal with Pennichuck on Monday, Mayor Donnalee Lozeau said. By closing on the deal Monday, outgoing Pennichuck officials made one last big transaction before handing over the keys to the company on Wednesday to Nashua city officials.

The developer has the city’s permission to build 85 units of elderly housing on 33 acres off Concord Street – Pennichuck’s last piece of untouched developable land in Nashua – and can now start building at any time.

The sale prompted Lozeau to ask the Board of Aldermen to meet in a non-public joint session Tuesday night with the Conservation Commission to discuss whether the city can buy the property Continue reading “Pennichuck land deal finalized as Nashua prepares to buy company – NashuaTelegraph.com” »

NASHUA – After close review and sufficient recounting, the winners of two ward alderman election races kept their victories a second time around.

Ward 5 incumbent Alderman Michael Tabacsko gained a vote in Monday night’s recount, giving him a three-vote win over challenger Michael Gallagher.

And Ward 7 Alderman-elect June Caron gained seven votes, nearly doubling her lead over challenger Michelle Spears and allowing her to take a seat on the board almost immediately.

The recount of Ward 5 results provided nearly the same amount of tension as Election Day.

Six ballots were challenged after the recount, prompting the Board of Aldermen to examine each ballot and to decide each voter’s intent.

Gallagher had the edge in this portion of the review Continue reading “Recount confirms winners of 2 ward alderman elections – NashuaTelegraph.com” »

NASHUA – A new downtown district for metered parking includes a neighborhood where people don’t want to pay money to leave their cars outside their homes.

The east section of Temple Street, between Cottage Street and Temple Place, is scheduled to have meters for 18 existing parking spaces added as part of the city’s changes in parking laws. The meters would affect, according to various estimates, either several dozen or several hundred residents in apartments and homes.

The neighborhood was included in a new district that brought sweeping changes to downtown parking, with many meters costing more money but offering less time, to ostensibly circulate the flow of parked cars. Aldermen approved the parking plan in June, and it went into effect last week.

The city has yet to install the 18 meters along this section Continue reading “Nashua residents don’t want parking meters outside homes – NashuaTelegraph.com” »
